|
The Copper Country Homecoming is a gathering for anyone with a heritage or a curiosity in the unique history of the Copper Country and its inhabitants. This event is historically a perfect time to plan a reunion or a visit. Questions?- Calendar of Events, 2006-
A Brief History of the Program- In 1874, the first ‘Old Settler’s Ball’ for the Keweenaw was held at a hotel in Eagle River, Keweenaw County. Early settlers to the Copper Country, numbering 260, reminisced about the past days of the early copper rush which had started in 1844. The next and last ‘Old Settler’s Ball’ was held in 1890 at the Dee Building in Houghton. It was sponsored by the Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw Historical societies. The Ball was attended by the hundreds of persons, who again reminisced about the past days of the copper rush. These folds came by stage coach from the Keweenaw and Ontonagon, and by railroad from other areas of the United States. The Ball was a huge success. The 2004, in the spirit of the first two balls, a week-long event was held, culminating in the third ‘Old Settler’s Ball’. The Photo Fair, Seminars, and various other programs held throughout the Copper Country were an immense success.
